Jill Buck

Jill Buck, is a former Naval Officer; proud mother of 3; and founder & executive director of Go Green Initiative.

How do you eco?:
“I like to think of ‘green’ as who I am, not what I do. I’d like to think that I’m the kind of person who wouldn’t knowingly waste anything, and so I try to act accordingly. And I wouldn’t knowingly introduce toxins into my children’s world, and so I try to make sure I don’t. I “eco” by trying to think through the ramifications of my action (or inaction), and when I reach the point when I don’t know the effect of my actions, I try to find out….” More from Jill and her green favorites »

    TwilightEarth: Adam Shake

    March 4th, 2009 by HowYouEco

Adam Shake is founder of Twilight Earth, a blog about environmental issues, green world wide news and shared discussions. Adam lives near Washington D.C. with his wife and Rhodesian ridgeback, Katahdin. He spent time in the military, defense industry, homeland security and commercial real estate. He’s now working on a second novel and writes for environmental media companies. When not working on Pennsylvania Avenue, he can be found in a kayak, sailboat, or on the Appalachian Trail.

    How do you eco?

The biggest thing I do to lower my carbon footprint is take public transportation to work. I work 2 blocks from the White House and take the Metro to and from work every day. The Metro is great, and helps keep me humble. Every day, I see people from all walks of life, from generals going to the Pentagon to homeless people staying warm. I believe that we have to live a life of integrity, and as the founder of an environmental website, I feel as if I have to set the standard.

    Why did you go eco?

At the age of 29, I lost everything and had to reinvent myself. I went back to the only constant that I could find, and that was nature. I knew that everything that we place iconic representation on, everything that is created by and held dear, by man, can be taken away. I created a second life with less than $10.00 in my pocket, using nature as my go to. I realized, in the mountains and under the stars, that the world is real. Nobody could take away those things. I was wrong. Mountain tops are removed everyday for the coal inside of them and the valleys are filled with the dirt. The stars are blotted out by the unnecessary outdoor lights that light up our cities. The lakes, rivers and oceans are so polluted that we can’t even let their waters wet our skin. I decided to fight.

    What’s your favorite eco tip?

Educate ourselves about how seemingly benign everyday actions, like turning the heat up, effect the world around us. With education and the sharing of knowledge, habits and behaviors will change. Environmentalism isn’t just about saving the planet, it’s about saving ourselves.
